Alanya Archeology Museum, which started its activities with the mission of protecting archaeological and ethnographic artifacts, was opened in 1967 with finds from the Bronze Age, Phrygian, Urartu and Lydian Periods, which are of great importance in terms of revealing the long-standing history and rich chronological past of Anatolia, brought from the Ankara Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, and artifacts collected from the region until that day. There are 14 indoor and 1 outdoor exhibition halls in the museum.

The Phoenician stone inscription dated 625 BC, excavated from the ancient city of Laertes near Alanya and donated to the museum, is the oldest find in the museum’s Archaeology Department. The gray-colored inscription tells about the land donated by a governor to his servant and the problems related to it. Other important artifacts in this section include a 46-line inscription dated to the 2nd century A.D. in the same area, containing a letter of thanks sent by the Roman Emperor Septimus Severus to the people of Syedra for their refusal to join the rebellions against the empire in Rome, and two inscriptions in the Karamanlı language.

The most remarkable find in the archaeology section is the 52-cm high bronze statue of Heracles, dating back to the 2nd century AD, which is exhibited in a separate hall. Another artifact exhibited in this hall is the Hylas Mosaic, which depicts the scene of the abduction of Heracles’ friend Hylas by the nymphs. On the walls of the hall, the story of the discovery of the statue and the position of Heracles in mythology are displayed with pictorial panels.

In addition to these, the museum has marble, bronze, terracotta, and glass and mosaic artifacts from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods, as well as ash boxes and a collection of coins dating from the Archaic Period, which dates from the 7th to 5th centuries BC, to the Republic of Türkiye. Turkish-Islamic artifacts from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods are also among the collections worth seeing.

In the Ethnography Department, objects such as Nomadic (Yörük) rugs, saddlebags, weaving samples, ala sacks, clothes, objects of daily use, jewelry, bridal head jewelry, manuscripts, writing sets, weapons, and the daily room layout of Alanya’s old houses are exhibited, which reveal the folkloric characteristics and local values of Alanya Region.

Alanya Archeology Museum, In the garden of the museum, which is organized as an open exhibition area, there are ostotechs, which constitute an important part of the museum collection, and Islamic tombstones belonging to the Seljuk, Ottoman and the first years of the Republic of Türkiye, inscriptions, Roman Period column capitals, Roman Period olive oil production and the ‘Agriculture Corner’ where the tools used in agriculture are exhibited.
