The Ancient City of Arykanda is located within the borders of Arif Village in the Finike district of Antalya, approximately 30 km from Finike. The city is located on a land starting from the bottom of the steep and rocky rock called Şahinkaya and continuing towards the south.
The name of the city, which means ‘Ary-ka-wanda’, ‘Place by the High Rock’ in Lycian language, reflects the native Anatolian language from a philological point of view and indicates that it is one of the oldest cities of the region.
Discovered in 1838, the earliest architectural data in the ancient city of Arykanda are rock tombs dating from the end of the 4th century BC to the beginning of the 3rd century BC. The city, which first fell under Persian rule, regained its freedom during the reign of Alexander the Great. After his death, the city, which was under the rule of different states, became a member of the Lycian Union in the 2nd century BC and minted coins in its own name. Thanks to its location on important trade routes and abundant water resources, it was seen as a safe accommodation place during the Roman Period and lived its heyday in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. The city, which was inhabited until the great fire in 435 A.D. during the reign of Emperor Theodosios II, started to become poorer after the earthquakes it suffered and lost its former glory in the 8th century A.D.
In the ancient city of Arykanda, which exhibits a very successful example of architecture with its building planning, a well-organized settlement in the form of terraces is observed. The structure located at the highest point of the city is the watchtower at the southwestern foot of Şahinkaya. The acropolis to the south of the tower is believed to be the first settlement of the city. To the east of this area is the Bouleuterion and the temple built in the name of the god of the sun, Helios. The other structure at the top level after the watchtower is the stadion. On the terrace below the stadion, there is a small but very well preserved theater. On the lowest terrace is the odeon. Two doors behind the odeon lead to a ramped road, which connects with the western street and the street with stairs bordering the edge of the agora. In the southeast of the city, the gymnasium and the baths are located side by side. The burial area, called the ‘Eastern Necropolis’, is remarkable for its monumental tombs, many of which have survived to the present day. In the Early Byzantine Period, a church was built among the tombs. Four different level canals carved into the steep rock surfaces met the water needs of the city. The water canals, some of which pass under the main streets of the city, are works of fine workmanship that reveal a great engineering intelligence. The mysterious ancient city of Arykanda, hidden on the slopes of Beydağları (Beydaglar Mountains), looks like an open-air museum that brings its visitors together with the past ages.
