The Ancient City of Phaselis is located on a small peninsula extending to the Mediterranean Sea, about 58 km from Antalya and 12 km from Kemer. Founded by the Rhodians in the 7th century BC, the city has a very important position due to its geographical location.
Maintaining its position as the most important harbor of the east coast of Lycia for many years, Phaselis Ancient City has 3 harbors: North Harbor, Central Harbor and South Harbor. The most important of these is the South Harbor. The ship depictions on the harbors, agoras and coins of the city reveal its commercial harbor identity and its power in those years.
Considered as the city of Lycia or Pamphylia, the ancient city of Phaselis is actually between the borders of both regions. The city, which changed hands many times, came under the rule of the Romans in 43 BC and experienced a period of prosperity for many years. Emperor Hadrian visited the city in 129 A.D. In memory of the emperor, Hadrian’s Gate with a single arch was built at the entrance of the magnificent 20-24 meters wide main street starting from the South Harbor. Dominated by the Byzantines in the 5th and 6th centuries, the city was besieged by the Seljuks in 1158. From the 13th century onwards, due to the loss of the value and function of its harbors, it gradually lost its importance and was completely abandoned.
In the ancient city of Phaselis, there are ruins mostly from the Roman and Byzantine Periods. There are walkways and shops on both sides of the main street connecting the North and South Harbors. Widening between the theater and the bazaar, the main street forms a small square. To the southeast of the square is the theater from the Hellenistic Period. Three agoras, one opposite the theater and the other two to the right of the main street leading to the South Harbor, and the remains of two baths, one small and one large, located in the city square are among the other important monuments.
The most magnificent structure that has survived to the present day is the aqueducts. There are water channels between the city center and the settlement built on a plateau 70 meters high. The points of the ancient city of Phaselis, which sheds light on history with its glorious past and ruins that have survived to the present day, are called North Harbor, Central Harbor and South Harbor and are now used as beaches.
