In Demre district, covering an area of 260 square kilometers, located within the Kaş-Kekova Special Environmental Protection Area and registered as a first-degree archaeological site, the ancient city of Simena is one of the rare settlements in Turkey that is accessible only by sea. It is called Kaleköy today.
As a result of archaeological studies and scientific investigations carried out in the region, it is thought that the foundation date of the city dates back to the 4th century BC. The ancient records show that the city was a member of a federation headed by the Ancient City of Aperlai, including the Ancient Cities of Isinda and Apollonia.
Ancient City of Simena, a small Lycian city, is located on the peninsula opposite Kekova Island. It has a strategic importance with its favorable location, which enabled it to trade intensively with the Aegean, Mediterranean and Black Sea civilizations in ancient times. The most prominent relic that embodies this importance is the castle that has survived to the present day. From the castle, it is possible to enjoy a magnificent view of the Kekova Region.
When you approach the shore of the peninsula, you can see the ruins of the Roman bath complex, believed to have been built in 79 BC. On the shore, the harbor breakwater and Lycian sarcophagi in the water can be seen clearly, when the weather conditions are suitable. There are two sarcophagi on the way from the shore to the castle. When you reach the castle, there is the theater, which is one of the most important structures of the ancient city with 7 seating rows carved into the natural rock and a capacity of 300 people. Among the other finds of the castle are rock graves, water cisterns, and traces of a religious building that was used as a temple, church and mosque respectively. To the northeast of the castle lies a large necropolis area consisting of rock graves and sarcophagi.
