The ancient city of Xanthos, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located in the town of Kınık, 46 kilometers from Fethiye, on the Fethiye-Kaş highway. The city is built on two hills overlooking the plain by the Eşen Stream.
The city, which sheds light on history with its ruins that defy centuries, impresses its visitors with its sad story. When the city was besieged by the Persian Commander Harpagos in 545-546 BC, the people of Xanthos, realizing that they would lose despite their heroic struggle, committed suicide by killing their women and children and setting the city on fire, leaving a ruined city to their enemies. Families who survived this disaster and immigrants from elsewhere rebuilt the city. The city, which was the scene of constant wars and invasions because of its location, also faced a devastating fire between 475-450 BC.
In the ancient city of Xanthos, which was the most important administrative center of the Lycian Civilization and used as the capital in the 2nd century BC, Lycian Period pillar tombstones and rock tombs are among the important structures that have survived to the present day. The walls of the acropolis on both sides of the city attract attention with their walling techniques. To the north of the Lycian acropolis is the theater dating from the Roman Period. The most interesting ruins are to the west of this theater. The monumental tomb with ‘Harpy’ reliefs on a rectangular monolithic pedestal, believed to carry the souls of the dead to the sky, the Lycian Sarcophagus next to this tomb, the Roman Agora adjacent to the theater, the monumental tomb in the northeast corner of the agora, very similar to the Harpy Monument, famous for its inscription describing the adventures of a prince named Kherei written in Lycian and Greek on its body, are among the must-see works. The British Museum in London exhibits many artifacts excavated in the city. Excavations continue in the ancient city of Xanthos. This fascinating city, which bears the traces of many different civilizations, is among the places that those who come to Kaş should definitely include in their travel plans.
