Antalya Museum, which hosts many distinguished artifacts, exhibits finds and original collections that reveal the long-standing history of the region.
Antalya Museum was founded by teacher Süleyman Fikri Erten during World War I to protect historical artifacts from occupation forces. In 1919, Erten registered himself as a historical artifact officer by applying to the Antalya Governorate and took the first step by collecting the artifacts in the center. Founded in 1922 at the Alaaddin Mosque in Kaleiçi and operating in the Yivli Minaret Complex after 1937, the museum moved to its current building on Konyaaltı Street in 1972.
Spread over an area of 30 thousand square meters, the museum has 14 exhibition halls, a children’s section and open-air galleries, as well as a large and spacious garden where artifacts are exhibited and concerts and music recitals are organized from time to time.
The Antalya Museum, which mainly features magnificent sculptures excavated from the ancient city of Perge, witnesses a period extending from the Lower Paleolithic Age to the Roman Period. The museum, which is dedicated to the three important Mediterranean ancient civilizations ‘Lycia’, ‘Pamphylia’ and ‘Pisidia’ that lived within the borders of Antalya, received the ‘Council of Europe Museum of the Year’ award in 1988.
Most of the archaeological artifacts in the museum were obtained from periodic excavations carried out by domestic and foreign scientists in the region, while ethnographic artifacts were collected from the region by museum experts. Numerous rescue excavations in the region and the landscaping of the archaeological sites are also carried out by the Antalya Museum.
The exhibition, which draws attention with its chronological order, starts with the finds from Karain Cave and continues with the finds from Bademağacı, Karataş-Semayük, Bayındır Tumuli, Hacımusalar, Limyra, Patara, Xanthos, Arykanda, St. Nicholas Church, Perge and museum rescue excavations.
Among the exhibits are a collection of natural history and prehistory, statues of gods and emperors, artifacts from funerary cults, coins, mosaics and icons. A significant part of the large ethnographic collection is devoted to Ottoman culture. Antalya Museum, which includes halls such as Natural History and Prehistory, Ceramic Works, Regional Excavations, Emperors, Gods, Mosaic, Marble Portraits, Perge Theater, Perge West Street and F5 Fountain, Sarcophagi, Coins – Small Artifacts – Icons, Cult of the Dead, is one of the few museums in the world with its archaeological riches revealing the thousands of years of history of Antalya lands.
