One of the symbolic buildings of Antalya, the Clock Tower is located on Cumhuriyet Street in Kalekapısı, which was called ‘Kapuağzı’ in the old days. The tower, which is one of the main entrance routes of Kaleiçi, is one of the most preferred meeting points of Antalians with its central location.
The tower, which was built on the north-facing side of the destroyed outer walls surrounding Kaleiçi, was first built in the 9th century during the Byzantine Period with a square plan on a pentagonal bastion and was converted into a clock tower during the Ottoman Empire Period. Although it is not known exactly by whom and when it was built, it is widely believed that the tower was built by Grand Vizier Küçük Sait Pasha in 1901, during the reign of Sultan Abdülhamit II, to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Abdülhamit II’s ascension to the throne, as the construction of clock towers in Anatolia was popularized by edicts. According to the information found in the news of Antalya Anadolu Newspaper, the date of the completion of the construction of the Clock Tower is stated as 1921, the year when the National Struggle continued.
Until 1942, the Clock Tower, which was covered with a dome until 1942, was damaged in the storm that year, and in 1945, an upper part resembling the bastion battlements was added instead. There are four clocks on four sides and a bell on the top. The tower is 14 meters high from the ground to the top and 8 meters high from the top of the bastion, and a cornice decorated with fine foliate reliefs decorates the perimeter of the bastion. The upper part of the cornice is made of rough-hewn stone. A slightly protruding section made of cut stone forms the base of the Clock Tower. The clock and dials of the tower, which used to be set on a weekly basis and made a single strike every hour for the number of hours, were replaced with electronic clocks in 1974 by Ali Rıza Suduran, the famous watchmaker of Antalya. As one of the historical buildings that make up the silhouette of the city, the Clock Tower, which adds a different aesthetic to the appearance of Antalya, continues to defy the years with all its glory and elegance.
