What are Denture Types?

Dentures, aka false teeth or dental prostheses, are the last resort in dental treatment. They are applied in case of:

• Inadequate filling cannot be corrected with the treatment applied.

In denture applications, it is essential to protect the existing healthy teeth of the person. There are different types of dentures:

Fixed Denture

These dentures, applied by gluing into the mouth, cannot be removed by the patient. Fixed dentures are mostly applied to people with minimum tooth loss. They are applied using the existing teeth as support.

Zirconia Restorations

Zirconia is the most preferred fixed denture material in recent years. This material provides functionality, durability and aesthetics in teeth. Crowns are made of zirconia that is a metal element with white tones. Zirconia has a smooth and natural shine. Tooth colour in white tones is achieved by using zirconia.

Laminate Restorations

It is a procedure applied by bonding porcelain in the form of thin sheets. These thin sheets are applied onto the front surface of tooth. In this procedure, the intervention to the teeth is very little. It can only be applied to the front teeth. Laminate restoration can be applied for reasons such as concealing discolouration of teeth, hiding existing gaps, correcting the appearance caused by fractures, correcting slightly crooked teeth.

Removable Denture

Removable dentures, which can replace missing teeth, can be inserted and removed by the patient himself. It is preferred in cases where there are natural teeth but there is not enough support for fixed dentures. During the application, support is taken from existing teeth and tissues. There are four different types of removable dentures:

Total Denture

Aka artificial teeth, total dentures are preferred in cases where the patient has no teeth in the mouth. These dentures, applied separately to upper and lower jaw, are supported by existing bone tissue. When the total denture, which is specially produced for the person’s mouth size, is first worn, the patient may feel unfamiliarity in the mouth and fullness in the lips and cheeks. In addition, due to the stimulation of the glands, the amount of saliva may increase at first and the speech may be different.

Partial Denture

These dentures, which can be applied in cases where some of the natural teeth are missing, can be inserted and removed by the patient himself/herself. Partial dentures provide an aesthetic appearance as well as functionality when they are inserted instead of lost and missing teeth.

Immediate Denture

Immediate dentures or provisional dentures are applied to eliminate the aesthetic concerns caused by the extraction of natural teeth. When the teeth are first extracted, swelling occurs in the oral tissues. These tissues are expected to return to normal before permanent denture is made. During this process, the patient’s permanent dentures are also prepared. With the completion of the healing in the tissues, permanent dentures are applied to the person.

Implant Overdenture

A dental implant is a screw-like metal structure made of titanium alloy that is inserted into the patient’s jawbone in cases of tooth loss. The implant, which acts as a tooth root, facilitates the attachment of the denture on it and increases its strength.
