Gelidonya Lighthouse, one of the guide lighthouses of the Mediterranean, is located on the historical Lycian Way on the Taşlık Cape of Antalya’s Kumluca district. Located 3 km inland, the construction of the lighthouse started in 1934. In 1936, the lighthouse was commissioned. Gelidonya Lighthouse, named after Caledonia, which means swallow in Lycian, is the highest lighthouse on the Turkish coast with a height of 227 meters. The lighthouse and guard building of the lighthouse, which overlooks the endless blue waters of the Mediterranean from a lush green hill, has been taken under protection by the General Directorate of Coastal Safety and Ship Rescue Enterprises as a national heritage. The lighthouse, which does not have electricity because it was built on steep and steep rocks, used kerosene in the first years, then LPG cylinders, and in 2017, a system that provides electricity with solar energy was installed.
Gelidonya Lighthouse, which resembles a fairy tale heroine with its harmony with the nature of its location, has one of the most striking views on the route of the Lycian Way, one of the world’s important hiking routes. On the front side of the cape where the lighthouse is located, where the pine and sage scented forest of the Mediterranean and the deep blue waters meet in harmony, there are five islands lined up vertically, on which there are no settlements. The islands have an important place in Lycian history. Cape Gelidonya is known as the most dangerous place in the Gulf of Antalya due to the reverse currents. In ancient times, many ships were dragged to the rocks and sunk. Therefore, the region has turned into an underwater cemetery covered with shipwrecks over time.
The breathtakingly beautiful view of the lighthouse was chosen as the most beautiful view in Turkey in 2007. This magnificent view gives photography enthusiasts the opportunity to capture unique shots, especially at sunrise and sunset.
Gelidonya Lighthouse, which is not fully accessible by car, can be accessed from 2 points. The first one is the Adrasan-Gelidonya Lighthouse route on the Lycian Way hiking route. The entire 12 km long route must be walked on trails of medium difficulty level. The second route is the Karaöz Quarter-Gelidonya Lighthouse route, which is approximately 8 km long. It is possible to travel part of this route by car and the last hour on foot.
