Hıdırlık Tower, built atop the historical Kaleiçi city walls, is located at the southwest corner of the city walls, just adjacent to Karaalioğlu Park, on the road that leads to Kaleiçi. Famous for its spectacular view of the Beydag Mountains, the tower is one of the most important symbolic structures of the city with its impressive cylindrical architecture.
Built by the Roman Emperor Hadrianus in the 1st or 2nd century and presumed to be a monumental tomb, the tower is 14 meters high. The lower floor has a square plan and the upper part is built in a cylindrical shape. Frescoes were found in the room on the lower floor. There is a small observation area on the upper floor. It is thought that the tower, whose structure is quite durable and robust, was used for defense purposes or signal fires were lit from here due to the qualities of its internal structure. During the Byzantine Period, the tower, which was included into the city’s defense system, was combined with the city walls. It served as a pavilion during the Seljuk Period and as a military depot during the Ottoman Period. Throughout history, the Hıdırlık Tower was also used as a watchtower for ships passing through the Gulf of Antalya. During your sightseeing in the city center, you can easily reach the tower by heading towards the Kaleiçi entrance from Karaalioğlu Park. When you enter from Hadrian’s Gate on Atatürk Street, you can reach the tower by going in the direction of the sea along Hesapçı Street.
