The ancient city of Patara is located at the southwestern end of the Xanthos Valley between Fethiye and Kalkan, within the borders of Gelemiş Village. Among the finds belonging to the city, whose name is mentioned as ‘Patar’ in the Hittite manuscripts of the 13th century BC, the stone axe belonging to the pre-Iron Age, unearthed at the foot of the eastern slope of Tepecik, proves that the history of the city dates back to ancient times.

Patara, which has always been important throughout history being the only place of the Xanthos Valley that opens to the sea, also assumed the capital of the Lycian Union. The city, which became a Roman province in 43 A.D., merged with Pamphylia in 74 A.D., but continued to be the capital. Patara, which served as a harbor where grains from Anatolia were stored and shipped to Rome, was considered an important religious center for Christians because it was the birthplace of St. Nicholas, known as Santa Claus. The city, which maintained its reputation for many years, lost its importance over time as the 400-meter wide and 1,600-meter deep Patara Harbor began to fill with sand and boats had difficulty docking. The sand blown by the wind also filled the harbor over time and covered the city largely. Some of the ruins seen in the city today were unearthed under the sands, well preserved.

Excavated since 1988, the ancient city of Patara is entered through the magnificent Roman Triumphal Arch. According to the inscriptions, this arch was built around 100 A.D. on behalf of the regional governor. To the west of the arch lies the necropolis area with Lycian sarcophagi. At the southern end of the city, the 6,000-seat theater leaning against Kurşunlu Hill, where the general cityscape is best viewed, bears traces of Hellenistic and Roman Period architecture. From Kurşunlu Hill, other ruins such as the Bath of Vespasian, the Temple of Corinth, the main street, the harbor and the granary can be easily observed. To the north of the theater is the world’s oldest democratic assembly building, where Patara hosted meetings as the capital. Patara Ancient City The waterways bringing water from a cliff about 20 km away from the city are among the most remarkable ruins. The section called ‘Delik Kemer’ is the most monumental part of these waterways. The majestic Patara also has the oldest surviving ancient lighthouse in the world. Most of the lighthouse, which is about the height of a 5-story apartment building, is still standing. In this unique city, located close to the Lycian Way route, you can explore Patara Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, which is about 18 km long, after taking a historical journey dating back centuries. The beach is one of the rare places where Caretta Carettas have been laying eggs and breeding for millions of years.
