St. Nicholas Church is located in Gökyazı Quarter of Demre district. The tomb built for St. Nicholas, also known as ‘Santa Claus’, who was born in the ancient city of Patara and passed away in the ancient city of Myra, where he was a bishop, is one of the most important symbols that increase the tourism potential of Demre today.
Known as the ‘Saint of Miracles’ and very popular for helping the poor and distributing gifts, St. Nicholas Church, built by the Myrians in memory of St. Nicholas, is considered one of the rarest examples of Middle Byzantine Period church architecture that has survived to the present day with its decorations and architectural style.
Open to visitors since 1994, the church has many buildings built at different times on its original foundations. This gives the church the appearance of a complex built in different periods. The walls of the church, which has been repaired over time, are covered with paintings reflecting the miracles believed to have been performed by St. Nicholas. The Roman sarcophagus inside the church, decorated with fish scales and acanthus leaves, is thought to belong to Santa Claus, who lies in eternal rest.
There are various claims about the whereabouts of the stolen bones of St. Nicholas. The most common belief is that the bones were stolen during the Crusades by merchants from Bari Italy, and placed in the basement of the Basilica of San Nicola on the southeast coast of Italy. The remaining pieces of the bones are now on display at the Antalya Archaeology Museum. Every year, on December 6, an important date for Christians, many visitors belonging to the Orthodox sect come to Demre for the anniversary of the death of St. Nicholas and a mass is held in the church.
