The Lycian Way offers much more than a hiking route to its visitors with the endless blue of the Mediterranean, ancient cities that shed light on history, natural, historical and cultural beauties.
Starting from Hisarönü (Ovacık) of Muğla’s Fethiye district, the route, which covers nearly thirty different trails, ends at Geyikbayırı Village in Antalya’s Konyaaltı district after a 535-kilometer route.
The hiking route, which was created by marking and mapping the paths on the Teke Peninsula, known as Lycia in history, and which witnesses the countless beauties of the Mediterranean, is considered among the world’s top 10 long-distance hiking routes. Started in 1992 and opened in 1999 by Kate Clow, a British-born Turkish citizen, amateur historian and writer, the route can be hiked in 25 to 40 days, depending on performance. Experts recommend walking between January and May or September and November due to the ideal climatic conditions.
The trail, all of which is marked with the Grande Randonnee system and guided by yellow direction signs, is maintained by sponsoring organizations and volunteers. Accommodation is available in the settlements along the trail.
In addition to more than twenty ancient cities, the walking route includes Patara Beach, one of the longest natural beaches in the world with a length of 12 km, Kalkan, Kaş, Kekova, Demre, Finike, Korsan Bay, Gelidonya Lighthouse, which was selected as the most beautiful lighthouse in Turkey, Adrasan Bay, Musa (Olympos) Mountain, Çıralı Beach, Mount Tahtalı, the highest peak in Europe and Turkey on the coast, Tekirova, Göynük Canyon, and many other natural beauties along the Mediterranean coastline.
The Lycian Way The route also includes the ancient cities of Kalabantia, Sidyma, Pydnai, Letoon, Xanthos, Patara, Phellos, Antiphellos, Sebada, Apllania, Aperlai, Teimussa, Simena, Sura, Andriake, Myra, Belos, Gagai, Melanippe, Olympos, Chimera (Yanartaş), Phaselis. It also visits historical sites such as St Nicholas (Santa Claus) Church, Alakilise, Priest’s Rock, Gedelme Castle, Delikkemer and aqueducts that take water to Xanthos. Work on improving and enlarging the road continues regularly, especially for new routes passing through villages.
