Sensitive teeth, aka dentin hypersensitivity, are typically the result of worn tooth enamel or exposed tooth roots. Sometimes, however, tooth discomfort is caused by other factors, such as a cavity, a cracked or chipped tooth, a worn filling, or gum disease. There are 3 layers in a tooth. They are called, from outer to inner, respectively, enamel, dentin and pulp. Pulp is the living core thus causes sensation of the teeth. Teeth are stimulated by external sources due to wear or fracture in enamel or dentin. This causes tooth sensitivity. Accordingly, cold and hot food and beverages cause discomfort and pain sensation in the teeth.
What are the Symptoms of Tooth Sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity can manifest itself in 2 ways. The first one is the whining of the teeth without any external effect. The other is the sensitivity caused by external factors. Among them are hot, cold, sweet and sour consumption. In both cases, the symptom is the same: tingling and a restless state of pain.
What are the Conditions that Increase Tooth Sensitivity?
One of the conditions that cause tooth sensitivity is caries. Due to the loss of substance in decayed teeth, dental nerves will become hypersensitive to:
- External environment,
- Hot and cold,
- Sweet and sour.
In addition to caries, tooth fractures and tooth abrasions will also cause pain and sensitivity. Apart from these, abrasions caused by clenching teeth at night also cause sensitivity.
Treatment Methods
Tooth sensitivity treatment methods vary according to the condition and cause of sensitivity. Sensitivity caused by caries is treated with dental fillings and sensitivity caused by deep caries is treated with root canal treatment. Fillings or veneers may be preferred for sensitivity due to fractures. In cases of sensitivity due to gum recession, gum treatments are performed. Occasionally, exposed surfaces of tooth roots can be treated by applying bonding resin to the sensitive root surfaces. A local anesthetic might be needed.Additionally, people must pay attention to toothpastes and toothbrushes and ensure oral and dental hygiene. Fluorine can be applied to strengthen sensitive teeth and reduce pain. Gum treatment can be performed in order to prevent gum problems from causing sensitivity.
When is it Possible to Eat & Drink After Sensitivity Treatment?
Food and drinks that are not excessively hot or cold can be consumed approximately 1 hour after the treatment. The patient can return to work/social life after 1 day.
