The ancient city of Olympos is located in the Kumluca district of Antalya, within the borders of the Beydağları – Olympos National Park, and is named after Tahtalı Mountain, 16 km to the north. It is approximately 87 km from Antalya and 28 km from Kumluca. Known as the ‘Home of the Gods’ and one of the most beautiful locations on the Lycian Way, Olympos offers its visitors a miraculous atmosphere where nature and history are intertwined.
Olympos Ancient City, the second most important harbor city after Phaselis Ancient City on the southern coast of Antalya, is one of the 6 cities with three voting rights in the Lycian Union, mentioned in the Lycian Union coins minted in 167 – 168 BC, although the exact date of foundation is unknown.
Surviving to this day and revealing the glorious history of the period during the tour, the ruins of the city belong to the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine Periods. The ruins are located at the mouth and on both sides of a river that meets the sea, mostly from east to west. The river bed dividing the city in two was enclosed in a canal, both sides were used as piers and connected by a bridge. One leg of the bridge is still in place. Many of the ruins are in the forest, covered with trees and bushes. On the south bank of the river, there is a small theater with a well-preserved entrance on one side and a rather dilapidated one on the other. Another important structure is the gate of the temple, which was built in the name of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurellius, according to the statue pedestal in front of the gate about 150 meters west of the river mouth. The most interesting artifact among the ruins is the sarcophagus of Captain Eudomus, unearthed by excavations carried out by the Antalya Museum. The sarcophagus, which was found in the hollow of the rock near the mouth of the river on the road towards the beach, is important in terms of the mention of the captain’s name in the emotional inscription and the shape of the captain’s ship in the relief on the long side. Ancient City of Olympos is also a popular holiday resort. Located in the area extending inland from the ancient city, accommodation is possible in bungalows and tree houses surrounded by greenery, and many businesses with different concepts have been opened recently. There are also businesses near the beach where you can also camp with a tent. Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey, tourists can reach the Olympos coast by passing through the ruins and breathing in the historical air.
