Alanya Castle, which is considered one of the most important symbols of Alanya district, is an open-air museum built on a 10-hectare peninsula approximately 250 meters above sea level, together with the historical artifacts within it.
Built in the Hellenistic Period, the texture of the castle, which has hosted Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman Civilizations until today, is based on the 13th century Seljuk Period architecture.
The ruins of Alanya Castle, which was considered an important navigation point for sailors under the name of ‘Beautiful Mountain’ during the Byzantine Period and was the busiest harbor of the Mediterranean, the church in İçkale, the Arab Evliyası, the monastery ruins on Cape Cilvarda and the ruins of the round tower walls from Orta Hisar to İçkale belong to the Byzantine Period. In 1221, the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubad I, who took over the city and renamed it Alaiye, started a major reconstruction activity in the city, strengthened the old walls and built new ones. Today’s existing city walls, large cisterns, shipyard, Kızılkule, Tophane and the palace complex in İçkale are some of the artifacts built by Alaeddin Keykubad I. Ehmedek, Akşebe Masjid, Andızlı Mosque, Selçuklu Bath, Aşağı Kale Bath were also built during the Seljuk Period.
Being difficult to access by land and sea, Alanya Castle has maintained its importance throughout history. The length of the walls of the castle, which reveals the splendor of the Seljuk Period, is 6.5 km. It has 83 towers and 140 bastions. In the Middle Ages, some of the nearly 1,200 cisterns placed within the walls to meet the city’s water needs are still in use today. The main works in İçkale were built on the inside of the fortress walls on all sides except the west.
Rising on the Mediterranean coast and defying time as a unique symbol summarizing the history of Anatolia, life continues today with all its vitality in Alanya Castle. On the streets where traditional Alanya Houses are located, silk and cotton weavings are made on wooden looms set up in front of the houses. In workshops, gourds, a local handicraft, are made and sold. Authentic meals are served in restaurants in small gardens. The castle, which is open to vehicle traffic, can be reached on foot in about 1 hour. You can also take the Alanya Cable Car to the top with spectacular scenery. The castle, which is one of the first places to visit when you visit the district, puts Alanya under your feet in all its glory.
