The ancient city of Antiphellos, on which Kaş district is built, is one of the oldest settlements of the Lycian Region. Antiphellos was a small settlement in the 4th century BC, which was the harbor of the city of Phellos, located a little above it. However, during the Hellenistic Period, it became more prominent compared to Phellos, which declined. During the Roman Period, the city, which increased its power by trading cedar wood and sponge fishing, left its position as the harbor of Phellos and became a developed and rich city.
Finds belonging to the ancient city in Kaş can be seen around the district and along the peninsula extending in the east-west direction. In the section where the peninsula begins and on the side facing Meis Island, the remains of Hellenistic city walls are found. There are remains of a temple southeast of the church, which has been converted into a mosque today, where the walls face the harbor.
One of the must-see monuments of the ancient city of Antiphellos is the theater. The 3,000-seat theater to the south of the Acropolis hill leans against the slope and faces the sea with 26 seating rows. It is the only ancient theater facing the sea in Anatolia. To the northeast of the theater, believed to be from the Hellenistic Age, there is a burial chamber with 24 female reliefs carved into the bedrock. Another must-see structure is the ‘Lion Sarcophagus’, located in the Uzun Çarşı (Long Bazaar) and considered one of the symbols of the district. The lion’s head reliefs are carved on both sides of the lid of the sarcophagus dated to the 4th century BC. There is an eight-line inscription in Lycian language on it. The sarcophagus, the inscriptions of which cannot be read, is considered to have been built for a king and for this reason it is called ‘King’s Tomb’ among the people. The tombs carved into the rock on the slope behind the city are important examples of Lycian Period tombs with their inscriptions and facade workmanship. Lycian type sarcophagi located in the water around the harbor are among the other important structures.
