One of the best preserved ancient cities in Turkey, the ancient city of Termessos is located 30 km northwest of Antalya, on the Korkuteli Road. At an average height of 1,150 meters above sea level, the city was founded on the southwest of Güllük Mountain. Hidden among many wild plants resembling a botanical park and covered with dense pine forests, Termessos has a unique atmosphere that impresses visitors with its peaceful and pristine appearance. Due to its natural and historical riches, the city has been included in the national park that bears its name.
The ancient city of Termessos was founded by the Solims, descendants of the Luwians, one of the oldest peoples of Anatolia. Its rise to an important position in history was possible because its people did not surrender their city by making a strong defense against Alexander the Great, who besieged the city in 333 BC. Termessos, which cooperated with Rome, was approved by the Roman senate to be independent in its internal affairs. There is no clear information about the status of the city, which apparently maintained its independence with the coins minted during the Roman Imperial Period, during and after the Byzantine Period. The city, which has not seen a new settlement after it was abandoned, has been preserved quite well until today.
The ruins of the city, starting with the city wall from the Hellenistic Period near Yenicekahve, continue to the peaks of Güllük Mountain. Following the road to the city, the steps and monumental entrance of the temple built during the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian are seen. Climbing southward from the area where the water source is located, there is a gymnasium consisting of many rooms and halls and a colonnaded street to the southwest of it.
When you reach the level area, you come across the official buildings of the city. Here are the stoa, the agora and, to the east of the agora, the spectacular theater with a capacity of about 5000 people, overlooking the Gulf of Antalya. About 100 meters southwest of the theater is the partially preserved parliament building. Five interconnected cisterns on the level area to the east of the agora have unique features in terms of depth and width. The city, which has many magnificent temples, is also very rich for the variety and ornamentation of its tombs. The ancient city of Termessos, which is one of the most important historical riches not only in Döşemealtı district but also in the whole of Turkey, is among the must-see national heritages.
