Aspendos Ancient City and Ruins The Achaeans founded the ancient city of Aspendos, located about 9 km from Antalya’s Serik district, in the 10th century BC. The city spread on the plains of the hill near the Köprüçay River.
Aspendos Ancient City and Ruins, which was one of the first cities in the region to mint coins in its own name, owes its development to the nearby river and fertile soils. The city remained under Persian rule until the first quarter of the 5th century BC, and its most glorious era was the Roman Imperial Period, when its famous theater and waterways were built. The city continued its existence during the Byzantine and Seljuk periods.
The most prominent building in the ancient city is the theater, which is dedicated to the gods and emperors of the period and makes its visitors feel the golden ages, wealth and splendor of the Roman Age. Located on the slope of a small hill with a capacity of approximately 12,000 people, the ancient theater is famous for being one of the most well preserved structures with its stage in the entire Mediterranean world.
Next to the theater are 15 km of arched waterways, other important ruins of the city. There are 30-meter high water pressure towers at both ends of the north-south arched bridge, which is about 1 km long. The city’s water is collected in pear-shaped cisterns carved into the bedrock, which can be seen in places on the hill. This unique waterway system is one of the rarest examples of ancient waterways preserved until today.
