Located at an altitude of 230 meters on the hill of Çıralı – Yanartaş, about 35 km from Antalya’s Kemer district, Yanartaş is known as the ‘Unquenchable Fire of Olympos’. Every year thousands of tourists flock to the region to breathe the mysterious air of Yanartaş, which has a natural fire source.
The fact that the unquenchable fire of Çıralı – Yanartaş, which is a continuously burning methane gas flames coming out of the holes on the rocks on the hill, is considered sacred is based on Homer’s texts. According to the legend, the three-headed monster named Chimera, a mixture of lion, goat and snake, emits flames as it breathes. The young Bellophontes, who was assigned by the Lycian King of the time to kill the monster, succeeds with his winged horse Pegasus. When the Chimera takes to the air to attack, Bellophontes stabs the monster with his spear and buries it seven levels below the ground. Even today, the Chimera continues to produce fire from this place.
In Kemer, which fascinates its visitors with its natural and historical beauties, a challenging yet enjoyable trail that will take about half an hour through narrow paths awaits those who want to climb Yanartaş, one of the must-see places. Because even if water and soil are thrown on it, the stones start to burn again after a certain period.
Other interesting ancient remains of Yanartaş include the Byzantine Orthodox Basilica Complex, which includes houses and churches where the priests of the period lived. The large and monolithic festival area in the south gives the impression that there was once a temple of the god of fire in the region.
Çıralı – Yanartaş, which impresses its visitors for its peaceful atmosphere, also attracts the attention of those who want to be in touch with nature with its day camps and bungalow-style hostels. Another important guest of Çıralı beach is the Caretta Carettas that come to the region every year to nest.
To reach Yanartaş, you first need to go to Çıralı. After a journey that will take about 1.5 hours from Antalya by car, you arrive at the entrance of Çıralı. The road continues to the left from the bridge at the entrance and takes you to Yanartaş 3.5 kilometers after passing the area where bungalows, hostels and orange groves are located.
