There are various methods of teeth whitening treatment:
Custom-made Whitening Trays for Home Use:
In this method, dental impressions are taken first. With impressions taken from inside the mouth, custom-fitted whitening trays are designed. 10-15% carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide is applied into this designed tray. The tray is worn for approximately 10-15 days. Wearing 4-6 hours during the day or 8-10 days during night sleep is recommended.
In-Office Teeth Whitening (whitening at dentist’s office):
This treatment method is also known as “Laser teeth whitening”. It must be applied by a dentist at a dental clinic. It takes less time (one hour) compared to other whitening methods. The whitening gel, once applied on teeth, is activated by using UV light or laser.
Combined Teeth Whitening (At-Home + In-Office Teeth Whitening)
This method combines tooth whitening at clinic with tooth whitening at home. The procedure performed in the clinic is supported by at-home teeth whitening for 2-3 days.
Teeth whitening solution for a single tooth (Intrinsic Whitening)
This procedure is applied to teeth that are exposed to discolouration after root canal treatment. Tooth filling is removed and whitening gel is applied to the opened cavity. Then. the cavity is filled with a temporary filling. Sessions are repeated at 3-day intervals until the desired colour is reached.
Which Teeth Whitening Method is More Effective?
If the tooth colour is close to white and a few tones of whitening is desired, only laser or at-home whitening will be sufficient. However, if there is severe discolouration, the combined teeth whitening method is more effective. In order to decide which teeth whitening method is more effective, a dental examination is required.
Is Teeth Whitening Safe?
Whitening methods may cause a slight sensitivity in the teeth to very hot or cold foods and drinks. This side effect, which is a normal and expected situation, usually disappears within 24-48 hours. Whitening treatment performed under the supervision of a dentist does not cause any harm to the teeth.
How long does it take to whiten teeth?
Although it varies according to the patient’s condition, it takes averagely 2-3 weeks to whiten teeth. Removal of discolouration caused by antibiotic use is more difficult and requires a longer period of time.
Is the Effect of Teeth Whitening Permanent?
The whiteness of the teeth begins to disappear over time. This is called tooth discoloration. The patient’s tea and coffee consumption and smoking habits determine how long the teeth will remain white, and this period varies between 6 months and 1 year on average. Supporting the whitening process with 1 or 2 sessions every 6 months ensures that the whiteness of the teeth becomes permanent.
Aftercare
During and for two days after the whitening treatment, coloured liquids and foods such as tea, coffee, chocolate, wine, cola and tobacco products should be avoided.
